Skilak Canoe

July 7 - 11 | Ages: 12-14

Have you ever wondered what life is like from a canoe? Exploring where no trails lead, and the luxury of the canoe carrying the weight of your gear. Join us to paddle Skilak Lake, check out surrounding trail systems, and learn wilderness skills. We’ll be HoWLing in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, and traveling in style.

Sadie Survival Skills

July 18 - 20 | Ages: 10-13

Learn survival skill essentials on this 3-day adventure! Build and sleep in a survival shelter, practice different fire-building techniques, and learn the art of cooking backcountry meals over a campfire. We’ll be base-camped on the beach below Sadie Knob, with time for survival skills, day hikes, and campfire tales.

Summer Fire & Ice

August 5 - 9 | Ages: 10-13

Fire and Ice is composed of three day trips, followed by a camping overnight. Over the first three days, HoWLers will explore local trails and learn skills that are essential for having adventures in the Alaskan wilderness. HoWLers can then practice their skills on a 2-day backpack in Kachemak Bay State Park. 

The Woz

June 19 - 23 | Ages: 13+

Fly in on a bush plane to the remote Wosnesenski (Woz) Lake. Rock-climb on the cliffs surrounding camp, explore nearby peaks, and soak in views of the Woz glacier and mountain goats! With over 15 climbs that we know of, The Woz offers unique routes for climbers of all experience levels.

Red Mountain Trails

June 9 - 13 | Ages: 14+

Challenge yourself with “Trail Building 101” at Red Mountain, an area like nowhere else in Kachemak Bay. We will build a segment of trail to help connect Graduation Peak with the Tutka Backdoor Trail. In the field, Ground Truth Alaska will teach us the basics of route-planning and trail-building techniques.

Kachemak Crack

July 27 - 30 | Ages: 13+

Join HoWL for the best of beach base-camping at Kachemak Crack! Learn how to rock climb or practice your technique on the Salty Dawg route. If you’re not on the rocks, hop on a paddleboard, play games, try a craft, or practice your wilderness skills. Get ready to challenge yourself and have a blast.

Experienced outdoor educators and aspiring volunteers will spend five days learning HoWL's unique teaching methodology while canoeing on Skilak Lake. We'll practice remote risk-management scenarios and discuss outdoor industry topics. If you are interested in volunteering for HoWL, you can email us to inquire.
